Kitchen Fire Safety Tips

  1. Stove Safety -
    • When cooking with oil make sure there is food always in the pan, or turn off the burner. It only takes a second for hot oil, butter, margarine, lard or any other type of oil or fat that is used for frying or sauteing to catch on fire.
    • Clean the grease off the stove. Grease can easily start a fire.
    • Jewelry or long sleeves, loose clothing can catch on fire, roll up your sleeves, take off your jewelry or scarf. Clothing items can catch on fire, and can give you a serious burn.
    • Curtains, dishtowels, potholders etc. that hang down near or over the stove can catch on fire.
    • Be careful of cooking utensils that are left in or near the stove, including in the pot - pan can catch on fire.
    • Don't keep matches or any other flammable items near or on the stove.
    • Don’t leave spoons or other utensils in pots while cooking.
    • Vents must be cleaned on a regular basis
    • Don't turn the handles of pot toward the stove, they can heat up and catch on fire. Keep them away from the flames or burners.
  2. Microwave -
    • Make sure what ever bowls, plates are microwave safe.
    • Be careful of frozen food before you put frozen food or ready made food tray in the microwave make sure it is microwave safe.
  3. Broiler -
    • Keep your broiler clean.
    • Be careful when using aluminum/silver paper in the broiler.
  4. Coffee Pot - Coffee Maker - Don't leave your coffee maker on when you are not home.
